In November 2021, Nintendo introduced the Island Newspaper feature to Animal Crossing: New Horizons through the Version 2.0 update. Accessible via the NookLink service within the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app, this feature allows players to revisit notable events and activities from their island life.
What is Animal Crossing
The Island Newspaper automatically logs significant occurrences, such as bug captures and villager birthdays, enabling players to recall about their in-game experiences. Additionally, it tracks turnip prices throughout the week, assisting players in making informed decisions in the stalk market. This feature adds game’s experience by providing a personalized record of the player’s island activities.
Indeed, prior to this in-game feature, Nintendo had already used an Animal Crossing-themed newspaper, “The Crossing Guardian.” Launched in September of 2002, this ersatz newspaper was reporting on a typical in-game village and its happenings each week and even doubled as the official website for Animal Crossing, updating players about news and stories within the universe of Animal Crossing.

The introduction of Island Newspaper in New Horizons is one more reflection of Nintendo’s continued effort to engage the player by providing them with the means for reflecting and further investigation of the world of the game.
